RECONNOITERING

This is what two days of reconnoitering looks like:

Scope maps, drive on back roads, stop at bridges and culverts, admire the Mighty Miss where it is still extremely modest, hike into canoe landings, nap, discuss, repeat.

The goal is to confirm a safe and reasonable place and time to launch. Gotta take into account: park construction at the top of the headwaters, the height of the wild rice (creates challenging navigation), river levels at rocky sections, plus our transportation and daylight schedule.

  1. Exciting! And beautiful photos! Would you kayak in places as narrow as in the first and third photos?

    1. The first photo is a view immediately upriver from where we now plan to launch, so, essentially, yes to that!

The third photo is a view from the launch site through the wild rice to the river. We'll push the boat through that space, but won't be able to paddle it.

We were advised that there may be portions of the river spread out and choked enough with vegetation to make it difficult to place our strokes. We didn't see anything like that during our two days, and hope we can push through it and find a good route.
